Trip Overview
Island Peak offers an exhilarating climbing experience (to over 6,000m apart) away from simply trekking in Himalayas Mountain ranges. It is a shorter expedition especilally for those who want to attempt a typical Himalayan peak in just over a couple of weeks without going to Everest Base Camp. Standing on top of Island Peak certainly gives a similar sense of achievement like you are on top of Mt. Everest.
Of all the trekking peaks in Nepal, Island peak is the most well known as it is suitable for all newcomer climbers and experienced trekkers. And as a matter of fact, the Himalayan peaks have drawn climbers, adventurers, and cultural enthusiasts for many years. The Island Peak is often taken as a first step for most of the climbers before any summit venture of massive peaks in the Himalayas.
The expedition begins right after a 35minutes dramatic flight to Lukla. Further, the trail is headed to Namche Bazaar via Phakding across a beautiful Dudhkoshi and Bhotekoshi Rivers and crossing a delicate suspension bridge. We then further go up through Thyangboche witnessing spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Mount Everest, and Lhotse before finally heading off to Island Peak. The Island Peak summit day involves crampons, climbing ladders, ascenders, descenders, and rope work and then onto a phenomenal glacier.
Moreover, steep snow leads to an excellent summit ridge. The spectacular views of many Himalayan giants, including the massive face of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse and beyond to Baruntse and Makalu leave you wholly speechless.
Interesting facts about Island Peak Climbing
- The peak is actually an extension of Mt.Everest and the Southern ridge of Lhotse.
- The Peak was previously known as Imja Tse. Observing from Dingboche the peak looks like an island in between a sea of ice and hence, it was renamed the Island Peak.
- Out of 62 scaled, 51 trekkers incredibly succeeded the Islan Peak in 2016. Likewise, 90% successfully climbed in the year 2017/2018.
- An ideal all in one Peak
How Difficult is it to Climb Island Peak?
Climbing Island Peak is somewhat difficult as compared to the other peaks in Nepal. Likewise, trekking to Island peak base camp is challenging in itself. It requires a good physical conditioning. Prominently, the climb is graded as Alpine PD+. However, the peak is less challenging for experienced trekkers and climbers.
In spite of the fact that the peak is physically tough. It is absolutely doable with the best team along with the effort, willpower, and dedication.
