Trip Overview

The Upper Dolpo situated at the north-west region behind the Dhaulagiri(8167m) massif, towards the Tibetan plateau is a legendary region of Nepal. It is one of a unique paradise with a rugged landscape, unspoiled Buddhist culture and moreover untouched by modernization. This region is totally a vast and is estimated to cover 15% of Nepal. The particular trek also known as The Inner Dolpo Trek takes the keen travelers of the most remote area of Nepal. This beautiful trail covers a wide variety of landscapes varying from fertile rice terraces and barren landscapes to an eye-catching mountainous terrain. Interesting Facts About Upper Dolpo 

  • Shey Festival: There occurs a grand celebration on Dragons year according to the Tibetan calendar. On this day people go for Kora(roaming) around the Crystal Mountain. The festival lasts for 5/6 days.
  • Likewise, the 16 days Yungney festival is another important festival in this region. People take food and mediate each alternate day. And during meditation, they aren’t allowed to eat food neither talk to each other.
  • As a matter of fact, there is only a single school Dolpo Bon School in the entire region.
  •  Eric Valli’s brilliant movieHimalaya (Caravan) and Peter Matthiessen’s meditative book The Snow Leopardturned the undiscovered land into major attractions of tourists.

Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhuphal (Dolpo) and trek to Dunai (2,850m/9,348ft): 45 mins flight, 2-3 hours trek

Day 05: Dunai to Ankhe (2,896m/9,499ft): 5-6 hours

Day 06: Ankhe to Sulighat: 5-6 hours

Day 07: Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake (3,611m/11,849 ft) 4-5 hours

Day 08: Acclimatization and rest at Phoksundo Lake

Day 09: Trek to Phoksundo Khola: 4-5 hours

Day 10: Phoksunds Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang: 6-7 hours

Day 12: Acclimatization and rest at Shey Gompa
